Front page of the Bismarck Tribune for Thursday, 24 July 1930. In the right-hand columns is "Brand as Untrue Claim Announcer Was Extortionist," with the deck "Detroit Newspaper Says Police Commissioner Admits Earlier Charge Was False," credited to the Associated Press and datelined Detroit, July 24.

It reports that the Detroit News said Police Commissioner Thomas C. Wilcox admitted that his statement that he held an affidavit accusing Jerry Buckley of taking $4,000 from a racketeer was false. It adds that Buckley, political commentator for station WMBC and active in the recall of Mayor Charles Bowles, was shot in the lobby of the LaSalle Hotel, and lists the theories police had advanced.

This is one newspaper's account of another's report. The page does not name the Purple Gang.
