A news photograph and caption: federal officers had rounded up Detroit's 'Purple Gang' and four of its members had been indicted for conspiracy to violate the prohibition law; the picture shows the United States Marshal herding prisoners into a police van.

Page 6 of the Brownsville Herald for Monday, 3 June 1929. At upper right is a news photograph headed "Detroit Rounds Up 'Purple' Gang." The caption reads: "Detroit's most notorious underworld group, known as the 'Purple Gang,' has been rounded up by federal officers and four of its members indicted for conspiracy to violate the prohibition law. Others await grand jury action." It identifies United States Marshal George Beamer, at right, "herding the prisoners into a police van after their examination in federal court."

The photograph is small and dark on the scan, and the men in it are not named in the caption. The description of the group is the caption writer's. The four indicted men are not named here; a July 1929 item reports the federal conviction of four men named as ringleaders (see [the Milwaukee Leader of 25 July 1929](/clippings/clip-milwaukee-leader-1929-07-25-p4/)), but this page does not say they are the same four.
