The Butte Inter Mountain front page of 14 April 1903 carries an Associated Press dispatch from New York on a man's body found in a barrel on East Eleventh Street.

Front page of the Butte Inter Mountain, Montana, Tuesday, 14 April 1903. The headline reads "Dead Body in a Barrel: New York Has Another Murder Mystery," with the decks "Woman in Case," "Scented 'Kerchief" and "'Come, Come in a Hurry' Says Bit of Paper Found in Pocket."

The Associated Press dispatch, datelined New York, 14 April, says police found the body of a man, apparently an Italian, in a barrel on East Eleventh Street near the docks, with the throat cut and the body still warm. It lists clues: the letters "W. T." painted on the barrel, an address in pencil, a scented handkerchief, and a note in Italian in a pocket. It says the dead man's hands and shoes suggested he was not a laborer.

This is a same-day report and the victim and the killers were unknown. The page is filed as a record of the first coverage. Its speculation about the circumstances is not taken here, and its descriptions by nationality are not quoted.
