Front-page report in the Daily Alaska Empire, Juneau, 18 March 1930, that Capone and Frank Cline left custody unseen after serving ten months of a one-year sentence.

Front page of the Daily Alaska Empire, Juneau, 18 March 1930, under the banner "NOTED GANGSTER NOW AT LIBERTY." The masthead reads "Member of Associated Press"; the story carries a "PHILADELPHIA, Penn., March 18" dateline and no separate credit line in the OCR. The headline is confirmed on the page image; the OCR reads "SOARFACE."

The story opens: "“Scarface” Al Capone with his bodyguard, Frank Cline, walked to freedom from the new prison at Gratersford while hundreds of curious spectators, newspapermen and photographers awaited his release at the front of the Eastern State Penitentiary in this city." It says "Capone served 10 months of a year’s sentence for carrying loaded pistols," with two months off for good behavior, and that Chicago police watched Union Station for his return.

"Gratersford" is printed that way. This archive cites the page for the reported release and term served; it is a newspaper report, not a prison record.
