A Chicago daily reports that Judge Landis "today continued his probe of the gambling situation that thrives by use of the Automatic telephone" and was to hear Mont Tennes and the head of the General News Bureau.

Image 2 of the Day Book for Monday, 2 October 1916, is a page of text in two columns with no headline of its own. The left column ends a story on a raid at the Sportsmen's club and a charge that four named men "are directly connected with the installation of slot machines." A separate item follows: "Judge Landis today continued his probe of the gambling situation that thrives by use of the Automatic telephone."

The paper says "It's hinted" that directors of the Automatic telephone company "have been making a lot of money by sending a lot of advance information on race horses over the wire," and that "It's this fact that Landis wants to get after." It reports that Landis was to hear "Mont Tennes, Will Tennes," the president of the Chicago Telephone Co., and "John Moreiock, head of the General News Bureau," as the name is printed. It adds that the state's attorney had an investigation of his own under way.

The page reports a federal judge's inquiry in the newspaper's own words; what it says about the telephone company's directors is hearsay ("hinted"), not a finding, and is not repeated here as fact. A handwritten gift inscription dated June 13, 1941 at the foot of the page belongs to the library copy that was filmed, not to the newspaper.
