The El Dorado Daily News front page of 25 January 1925 carries a dispatch from Chicago reporting that John Torrio was shot and probably fatally wounded outside his home.

Front page of the El Dorado Daily News, Arkansas, 25 January 1925. The Chicago story, headed "Windy City's Gang War Is Fanned Anew," is one item on a page whose lead stories concern other news.

The dispatch, datelined Chicago, 24 January, says gang warfare that two months earlier cost Dion O'Banion his life had flared again in an attack on John Torrio, whom it calls overlord of Chicago's underworld, beer runner and hijacker. It says Torrio was shot five times and "probably fatally wounded" as he stepped from his automobile in front of his home. It adds that Torrio refused to tell assistant state's attorneys about the shooting although he admitted he knew his assailants.

This is an early report. It predicts a fatal outcome, and its characterizations of the men it names, and its remarks about an earlier attack on another man, are not taken here. Headline as read from the Library of Congress OCR text of the page.
