The Evening Star's front page of 14 February 1929 carries the Associated Press report, filed the afternoon of the shooting, that seven men were shot in the rear of the S. M. C. Cartage Co. garage at 2122 North Clark street, Chicago.

Front page of the Washington Evening Star for Thursday, 14 February 1929, printed the same afternoon as the shooting. The story is credited "By the Associated Press" and datelined Chicago, February 14. Its lede reads: "Seven members of the North Side gang of George “Bugs” Moran were lined up against a wall and summarily executed and one other was probably fatally wounded today by a band of five, who invaded the North Side headquarters of the gang posing as police officers."

The report says the bodies were found "in the rear room of the S. M. C. Cartage Co., 2122 North Clark street," by police summoned by a woman living nearby. It names Peter Gusenberg and James Clark among the dead and Frank Gusenberg as the wounded man. It names Police Commissioner William F. Russell, Coroner Dr. Herman N. Bundesen and Assistant State's Attorney Harry Stansbury as the officials who took charge, and quotes Russell: "This is the end of gangland in Chicago." The story continues on page 2.

This is the first-day wire account, and its list of the dead is partial. A third name in the victim list is garbled in the Library of Congress OCR and is not repeated here. The archive cites this page for the printed address and for the officials it names; the early details of the attack are the reporter's account on the day, not findings.
