The Evening World's front-page report of testimony at the New York trial of Owney Madden, "on trial for instigating the murder of Patsy Doyle, a rival leader," as a woman witness told the jury how she gave the signal that led to the killing.

Front page of The Evening World, Final Edition, Wednesday, 26 May 1915. The page is dominated by the war at sea. The Madden story runs in a single column right of centre under the headline "Girl Tells Jury She Gave Signal for Gang Murder," with the decks "Margaret Everdeene, on Stand at Owney Madden's Trial, Describes Doyle Killing," "Helped Trap Victim" and "She and Freda Horner Were Cause of Gang Feud That Ended Fatally." It is the paper's own court report, without a wire credit.

The story opens, as read on the scan: "Calmly, with some show of satisfaction, Margaret Everdeene ... to-day told the jury in the case of Owney Madden, gang leader, on trial for instigating the murder of Patsy Doyle, a rival leader, how she gave the signal which led to Doyle's assassination. Two men, Beuler and McArdle, are in Sing Sing, serving life sentences for the actual murder." The rest of the column prints her testimony in the first person: a feud over the two women, a visit to Madden, and her account of calling Doyle to the telephone in a saloon before the shooting.

The Library of Congress OCR of this page is badly degraded, and the quotation above was checked on the page image. Everything on this page is a newspaper's account of one witness's testimony on one day of a state trial in New York; the paper's "gang leader" is its own label. This archive has not opened a court record of the case, and does not take from the page that the testimony was true. A home address the witness gave in court is printed in the story and is not repeated here. The verdict was reported a week later on a [New-York Tribune page](/clippings/clip-new-york-tribune-1915-06-03-p14/).
