A dispatch of 17 October reports that Antonio Scaffidi, identified as one of those accused in the Hennessy killing, was shot and wounded in the Parish Prison corridor by Thomas H. Duffy, 28, who gave no reason beyond his belief that the prisoner deserved death.

The Indianapolis Journal's page 2 prints a dispatch of 17 October headed "Bold Murder in a Prison: Assassination of the New Orleans Chief of Police Leads to Another Crime." It says Antonio Scaffidi was shot and mortally wounded at 11:45 a.m. in the Parish Prison corridor by Thomas H. Duffy, 28, who gave no reason beyond his belief that the prisoner deserved death; the subhead also mentions the funeral of the chief. Deputy sheriffs Fortier and O. S. Andry are named.

The paper's headline calls the shooting a murder. Scaffidi was later listed among those killed on 14 March 1891, so the "mortally wounded" report was not borne out. The St. Paul Daily Globe of the same date carries the same dispatch.
