A United Press story says gunmen shot up voting booths, slugged voters and kidnapped election officials at the 1 April 1924 Cicero election, and that 'Frank Caponi, said to be a bootlegger and gunman, was shot to death by Chicago police.'

Page 6 of the Indianapolis Times, Wednesday, 2 April 1924. The United Press story, datelined Chicago, April 2, says a dozen sluggers were under arrest and more were hunted after "a riot of slugging, bloodshed, kidnapings and one killing that marked the elections at Cicero, Chicago suburb Tuesday." It says: "Frank Caponi, said to be a bootlegger and gunman, was shot to death by Chicago police, called to aid the Cicero force."

It attributes the violence to rivalry between the Republican and Democratic factions, says gangs of gunmen shot up election booths, slugged voters, workers and candidates and kidnapped election officials, calls Cicero "one of the wettest spots in Illinois," and says police charged that beer runners headquartered there took a hand in the election.

The paper prints the name "Caponi" and does not say he was related to Al Capone. This archive has opened no second record of that killing, so the page is not used to identify him; the descriptions of him and of the beer runners are the wire service's.
