United Press front-page report of 17 March 1930 that a crowd waited outside Eastern Penitentiary in Philadelphia for Al Capone's release, and that the governor had signed the papers.

Front page of the Indianapolis Times, Home Edition, 17 March 1930. The story is credited "By United Press," datelined Philadelphia, March 17, with the deck "Governor of Pennsylvania Signs Papers for Gang Lord’s Freedom." It opens: "A crowd that by 1 o’clock numbered 1,000 persons stood outside eastern penitentiary today and waited restlessly for Al Capone to emerge a free man."

It reports that "Governor Fisher, in Harrisburg, signed the papers necessary for the gang leader’s release at 11:15," that the papers were sent by train, and that Capone was not expected to be released before evening.

The page reports the release as expected, not as done. The next day's Associated Press report, filed here from the Daily Alaska Empire of 18 March 1930, says he left from a different prison.
