Page 5 of the Milwaukee Leader, 6 July 1928: a United Press feature describing the Metropole Hotel at Michigan Boulevard and 23rd Street, Chicago, as Al Capone’s base, with a mention of the Hawthorne Inn in Cicero.

Page 5 of the Milwaukee Leader, Mail Edition, for Friday, 6 July 1928 prints a United Press feature by staff correspondent James K. Martindale under the headline “Furtive Guards Watch Over Gangland’s Ruler.” An editor’s note calls it “a day with ‘Scarface Al’ Capone.” It is credited “Copyright, 1928, by The United Press.” The feature is a reporter’s description, not a court or police record.

It places the hotel by cross streets: “the dingy rain-beaten red brick structure on a base of gray stone at the corner of Michigan Blvd. and 23rd St.,” with “an electric sign suspended over the doorway” that “announces the Metropole hotel.” It says men were posted at the entrance and that “moneys collected from gambling concessions, and other activities are brought to the Metropole.” It also says Capone goes by automobile “to the Hawthorne Inn, his Cicero headquarters,” and stays there “once in a while.”

The page prints no street number for the Metropole. This archive cites it for the named intersection and the hotel’s name in 1928. Descriptions of guards, rooms and habits are the correspondent’s account as printed and are not repeated here as findings.
