An Associated Press report: police and federal investigators believed an upheaval in the corn sugar trade drew twenty-seven 'gangsters' to Cleveland, twenty-three of whom were arrested in a downtown hotel.

Page 3 of the New Britain Daily Herald (Library of Congress title New Britain Herald) for Thursday, 6 December 1928. In the first column is "Sugar Monopoly Drew Cleveland Gangsters," with the deck "23 Arrested in Prominent Hotel—War on Over Sugar for Moonshine Liquor," credited to the Associated Press and datelined Cleveland, December 6.

It reports that police and federal investigators believed an upheaval in the corn sugar traffic used to make moonshine liquor drew twenty-seven "gangsters" to Cleveland; twenty-three were arrested in a downtown hotel and four more the next night. It links the earlier killing of Joe and John Lonardo, "corn sugar barons," to the sugar business and says the men refused to explain why they had come.

The hotel is not named here; the [South Bend News-Times of 7 December 1928](/clippings/clip-south-bend-news-times-1928-12-07-p17/) names the Statler. The explanation is the investigators', as reported, and no record filed here identifies the men.
