The Tribune's report that a jury in the Court of General Sessions found Owen Madden guilty of manslaughter in the first degree for instigating the killing of William Moore, alias Patsy Doyle, with a photograph of Madden and the two women witnesses.

Page 14 of the New-York Tribune of Thursday, 3 June 1915. The story runs across the upper left under the headline "Owney Madden, Found Guilty in Gang Killing, Escapes Chair by Manslaughter Verdict," with the deck "Gangster, Almost in Collapse at Fear of Death Sentence, Regains a Little Nerve When Foreman Announces Finding of Jury—Convicted by Girls' Testimony." A photograph spans two columns. Its caption reads: "Marjorie Everdeane and Frieda Horner, whose testimony helped convict. Top picture—"Owney" Madden."

The story opens, as read on the scan: "Owen Madden, leader of the Gopher gang, on trial for his life, for instigating the murder of William Moore, alias Patsy Doyle, heard himself declared guilty of manslaughter in the first degree last night in General Sessions." It says the verdict "means that he cannot be sentenced to a longer term of years than twenty," that he "was remanded to the Tombs until Tuesday for sentence," and that Judge Nott thanked the jurors.

The OCR of this page is reliable only for the headlines; the quotations above were read on the page image. The page reports a verdict on the night it was given; the sentence was still to come and is not on this page. "Leader of the Gopher gang" is the newspaper's description, not the jury's, and this archive has not opened a court record of the state case. The page spells the first witness's name "Marjorie Everdeane"; the [Evening World a week earlier](/clippings/clip-evening-world-1915-05-26-p1/) printed "Margaret Everdeene."
