A front-page report that Baron Fava, the Italian minister, presented his letters of recall on 1 April 1891, with the correspondence given out by the State Department. Fava's letter of 31 March recalls his notes of 15 and 18 March on New Orleans.

The Tribune of 2 April 1891 reports on its front page that Baron Fava, the Italian minister, presented his letters of recall on 1 April, and prints the correspondence given out by the State Department. Fava's letter of 31 March recalls his notes of 15 and 18 March on the New Orleans events and says four Italian subjects confined in the prison were massacred by the crowd. The Tribune's introduction says Blaine, regretting the step, defends the attitude of the United States.

Only the opening of the correspondence was read closely. The Tribune's characterization of the episode as a "glaring diplomatic blunder" is editorial. The official State Department texts are in the 1891 Foreign Relations volume.
