A front-page report from Richmond that about fifty Elks met on 17 August 1930 in answer to a call from Caspar Holstein of New York, who attacked Grand Exalted Ruler J. Finley Wilson. It records Holstein's public role in the fraternal order; it is not an organized-crime record.

The right-hand column of the Richmond Planet's front page for Saturday, 23 August 1930, carries a story headed "Prominent Elks Of Country Answer Call," datelined "Richmond, Va.—(CNS)." It reports that, "Responding to a call sent out by Caspar Holstein, of New York city, the aspirant that Wilson defeated last year," about fifty former Elks, most of them of the unaffiliated Williams Lodge of Richmond, met on Sunday, 17 August, to plan opposition to Grand Exalted Ruler J. Finley Wilson.

It says that "A vitriolic attack was made upon Wilson by Holstein," which the paper calls "the usual one he has carried on through the press for the past several years," and that a resolution signed by those present called Wilson "a czar." Later in the column it lists Holstein among a committee of five.

The page is filed for what it shows of Holstein's public life in 1930: a figure in the Elks who had stood against Wilson for the order's top office in 1929. It says nothing about gambling or about the 1928 kidnapping. "Caspar" is this paper's spelling. The quotations follow the Library's OCR, corrected for obvious misreadings ("vitrolic").
