Dispatches of 17 October: a newspaper carrier shot prisoner Antonio Scaffidi in the Parish Prison; 'John Matranga alias Caramba, the leader of the Matranga faction' was arrested as an accessory; the paper describes the Provenzano and Matranga factions; the chief lay in state and was buried.

New Orleans dispatches of 17 October on page 1 of The Times. Thomas H. Duffy, a newspaper carrier, shot the prisoner Antonio Scaffidi in the neck in the Parish Prison. "John Matranga alias Caramba, the leader of the Matranga faction" was arrested as an accessory, and over forty arrests had been made. The paper describes the Provenzano and Matranga factions as long before the police and courts, and says it was the Provenzano faction's purpose to bring Chief Hennessy as an important witness in their case against the Matranga faction. It reports the chief lying in state in the Council chamber and a funeral at 3 p.m., and that the Times-Democrat and Picayune urged that the law take its course.

The faction accounts are the dispatch's assertions. This is the page that gives the name "John Matranga" with the alias "Caramba" in October 1890; the same faction's leader is called Charles or Tony Matranga elsewhere. The page also reports an unverified claim about a secret society plan found in a suspect's residence.
