The South Bend News-Times front page of 11 June 1930 carries a dispatch from Chicago on the hunt for the killer of Chicago Tribune reporter Alfred Lingle.

Front page of the South Bend News-Times, Wednesday, 11 June 1930. The Chicago item is headed "Chicago Masses Forces to Avenge Reporter's Death," with the decks "'Loop' Shooting Leads to Battle to Crush Gangs" and "$40,000 Rewards Posted for Killer; Arrest Racket Chiefs."

The dispatch, datelined Chicago, 10 June, says Chicago "massed its forces against gangland" to solve the killing of Alfred ("Jake") Lingle, a Chicago Tribune reporter who covered the underworld, shot Monday afternoon in the crowded Randolph Street subway under Michigan Avenue. It says rewards totaling $40,000 had been posted, $25,000 by the Tribune, $5,000 by the Chicago Evening Post and $10,000 by the Chicago Press Club, and that police admitted they lacked a definite motive.

The page also reports the theory of most investigators about why he was killed and identifies the killer's escape route. Those are theories and early details and are not adopted here. The Bismarck Tribune page of 10 June, filed separately, gives a smaller reward total, which shows how early the figures were. Headline as read from the Library of Congress OCR text of the page.
