A United Press item from Cleveland: police saw a 'resumption of gang activities for control of this city's corn sugar industry' in the shooting of a man thought to be Frank Alessi, an associate of the slain Lonardo brothers.

Page 8 of a section of the South Bend News-Times for Wednesday, 20 August 1930 (image 20 in the Library of Congress viewer). In the first column is "Cleveland Gang Murders Enemy," with the deck "Corn Sugar Controllers Blamed for Slaying of Racketeer," credited to the United Press and datelined Cleveland, August 19. The headline was read from the scan.

It reports that police saw a "resumption of gang activities for control of this city's corn sugar industry" in the shooting of an alleged racketeer thought to be Frank Alessi, an associate of the slain Lonardo brothers, and that police believed members of the Porello gang shot him as possible revenge for the 1927 Lonardo killings. It refers, as printed, to the July murder of "James and Joe Porello."

The theories are the police's, as reported. A shorter United Press version in another paper names an alleged assailant; that version is not filed, and the name is not repeated here.
