A New Orleans dispatch of 16 October reports that Chief of Police David C. Hennessy, shot down by three men shortly before midnight, died at 9 o'clock that morning at the Charity Hospital; the paper says the assassination was supposed to be the work of Italians.

A short item on a busy front page, headed "Died of His Wounds," datelined New Orleans, 16 October. It reports that David C. Hennessy, chief of police, who was shot down by three men shortly before 12 o'clock the night before, died at 9 o'clock that morning at the Charity Hospital. It adds that the assassination was supposed to be the work of Italians whose vendettas he had determined to suppress, and that several arrests had been made.

This archive cites the page for the time and place of death as the paper reported them. The supposition about who was responsible is the dispatch's, not a finding.
