A dispatch of 13 March reports the jury's verdict in the case of nine Italians accused of killing Chief Hennessy: not guilty as to six, no agreement as to three, with the crowd denouncing the jury and secret meetings at which lynching was 'openly advocated.'

The Sun's front page for Saturday, 14 March 1891, carries a New Orleans dispatch of 13 March on the verdict in the trial of nine Italians accused of killing Chief Hennessy: not guilty as to six and no agreement as to three. It gives the split as printed: unanimous for acquittal of Macheca, the two Marchesos, Incardona, Bagnetto and Matranga; nine to three for conviction of Scaffidi; six to six on Monasterio and Polizzi.

The dispatch says the crowd denounced the jury, that the evening papers charged bribery, and that secret meetings were held at which lynching was "openly advocated." The jury split is as printed; the OCR spells several names badly, and the headline was read from garbled OCR. Both the Sun and the Richmond Times of that date reported verdicts; the two accounts differ, and the Sun's matches the Evening World's and the Pittsburg Dispatch's.
