Associated Press death report on the front page of the Sunday Star, Washington, 26 January 1947: Capone died at 7:25 p.m. on 25 January at his villa on Palm Island, Miami Beach.

Front page of The Sunday Star, Washington, 26 January 1947, the Sunday edition that the Library of Congress files under the Evening Star (LCCN sn83045462). The story is credited "By the Associated Press," datelined Miami Beach, Fla., Jan. 25, and opens: "Scarface Al Capone, 48, gangland leader who feared a mobsters’ death, died tonight amid the luxury of his private villa with his family gathered around."

It says death came "at 7:25 p.m. of pneumonia and heart failure, complications of an apoplectic stroke," names his physician as Dr. Kenneth S. Phillips, "who has treated the prohibition era gang leader since he emerged from prison November 16, 1939," and says he had been stricken "with apoplexy on Tuesday." The story continues on page A-6 with a retrospective of his career; that page is linked below and is not filed here as its own record.

The time and cause of death are the physician's statements as the wire service reported them; this page is not a death certificate. The continuation's account of his career is a 1947 wire retrospective, and this archive does not take facts from it.
