United Press report that Philadelphia's district attorney told the grand jury of $250,000 in Christmas presents to policemen in 1926 attributed to Max Hoff, whom the report calls the alleged head of a bootleg ring.

Page 3 of the Washington Daily News, 13 September 1928. A story headed "Max 'Boo Boo' Hoff Pictured in Role of Santa Claus," with the deck "Philadelphia Prosecutor Says Alleged Bootleg Chief Gave Lavish Presents to Police," is credited "By United Press," Philadelphia.

It reports that "Max 'Boo Boo' Hoff, fight promoter and alleged head of a $10,000,000 bootleg ring," was presented "in the new role of Philadelphia's Santa Claus. Dist. Atty. Monaghan announced that he had presented to the grand jury evidence of lavish Christmas presents by 'Boo Boo' to policemen, 'high and low.' They totalled $250,000 in 1926, Monaghan said." The district attorney said the gifts had been traced through federal Treasury agents, and charges against Detective Captain Beckman had been placed before the civil service commission.

Every claim here is the district attorney's, as the wire reported it. The page states no charge against Hoff and no conviction.
