The Washington Daily News front page of 15 February 1929 carries a United Press story from Chicago saying fear kept witnesses and gang figures silent after the killing of seven men.

Front page of the Washington Daily News, Home Edition, Friday, 15 February 1929. The page's lead is a bid for a new arms conference; the Chicago story is a column headed "Fear Seals the Lips of Those Who Saw Chicago Killers," with the decks "All Who Witnessed Departure of Slayers of Seven Are Silent; Al Capone's Throne Totters." This is page 1; a separate page of the same issue is filed under its own record.

The United Press story says fear "of the leaden hail" that killed seven men kept leading figures in Chicago's beer trade out of sight. It says squads of patrolmen rounded up people with police records, that fewer than two score were taken, that the state's attorney ordered those picked up brought to his office, that Capone and Joe Aiello were absent from the city, and that two of the five attackers wore police uniforms.

The sentence that Capone's position was "tottering" and the remark that the killers were "imported" are the writer's speculation and are not taken here. The page is a next-day record of coverage.
