The Washington Times front page of 6 November 1928 carries an International News Service story from New York reporting that Arnold Rothstein died of a gunshot wound without naming his assailant.

Front page of the Washington Times, Tuesday, 6 November 1928, Election Day. The page's lead is the election; the Rothstein story is a column headed "Rothstein Dies, Mum to End." The Library of Congress OCR renders the last words badly, and the headline was read from the page image.

The International News Service story by James L. Kilgallen, datelined New York, 6 November, says Arnold Rothstein, whom it calls a "picturesque Broadway plunger," was shot in a suite at the Park Central Hotel the previous Sunday night and died at Polyclinic Hospital at 10:20 that morning, and that to the end he refused to tell police who shot him. It says police were seeking five men who had been in the suite, three from New York and two Chicago gamblers.

The story states a police theory that the shooting arose from a gambling dispute. That is a theory as reported and is not adopted here. "Plunger" is the wire service's word for a gambler.
