International News Service interview by James L. Kilgallen, Miami Beach, 18 February 1929, in which Al Capone denies knowing anything of the Chicago garage killings.

The front of the Washington Times "General News Section," 18 February 1929 (image 3 of the issue as the Library of Congress scanned it). The story runs under the byline "By JAMES L. KILGALLEN" and the line "(Copyright, 1929, by International News Service)," datelined Miami Beach, Fla., Feb. 18. It opens with Capone's words: "I don’t know a thing about the killing of those seven gangsters in Chicago. How could I? I have been living here peacefully. Why do they blame me for all those unsolved crimes?"

The interview took place at Capone's island home at Miami Beach, and the reporter quotes him as saying "I have retired." The same page carries the banner "CLUES TO MASSACRE AUTO" over an International News Service story from Chicago, "2 MEN TELL OF SEEING CAR," on witnesses' descriptions of the car the killers used.

Capone's statements are his own denial, printed as he gave them. This archive records them as what he said to the press, not as evidence of what he did or did not know.
