First Circuit opinion of March 5, 1990 affirming the RICO convictions of Gennaro, Donato and Francesco Angiulo and Samuel Granito after an eight-month trial, with an account of the Patriarca Family's Boston operations taken from the 1981 surveillance.

United States Court of Appeals, First Circuit, March 5, 1990 (Bownes, J.). The appeals followed "convictions on jury verdicts rendered after an eight-month trial." The court affirmed the RICO convictions of Gennaro, Donato and Francesco Angiulo and Samuel Granito, and the gambling conviction of Michele Angiulo. It reversed certain forfeiture rulings.

In its statement of the facts, the court writes: "Defendants were all members of the Patriarca Family of La Cosa Nostra. Gennaro Angiulo was the underboss of this organization, in charge of its day-to-day operations. Immediately beneath him in the command hierarchy were 'Capo Regimes' (captains) Samuel Granito and Donato Angiulo." It adds: "The organization was headquartered at 98 Prince Street and engaged in widespread racketeering, gambling, and loansharking activities." The evidence came from FBI surveillance at 98 Prince Street and 51 North Margin Street from January to May 1981.

The opinion sets out four gambling businesses, extortionate loans and murder-conspiracy predicate acts. Most of the murder conspiracies were not at issue on appeal, but the 1981 killing of Angelo Patrizzi was, and the court states those facts in detail. This page does not repeat them. These are the appeals court's account of the evidence on which the jury convicted, and they are the basis for the role lines on the [Gennaro Angiulo](/people/gennaro-angiulo/) and [Samuel Granito](/people/samuel-granito/) pages.
