District Judge Walker's April 2, 1986 order detaining Anthony Salerno and Vincent Cafaro before trial on a Genovese Family racketeering indictment. It names the two Manhattan social clubs where the government's recordings were made, the Palma Boys Social Club and the club at 2244 First Avenue.

United States District Court, Southern District of New York, decided April 2, 1986, by District Judge Walker. CourtListener gives the docket number as No. 86 Crim. 245 (MJL). The government moved under the Bail Reform Act of 1984 to detain Anthony Salerno and Vincent Cafaro, two of fifteen defendants named in indictment 86 Cr. 245, filed March 20, 1986.

The court summarized the indictment: the defendants were charged as "leaders, members, and associates of the 'Genovese Organized Crime Family of La Cosa Nostra (The Genovese Family),'" and "The indictment charges that Anthony Salerno is the present 'Boss' of the Genovese Family and has served in the past as its 'Acting Boss' and 'Consigliere' and that Vincent Cafaro is a 'Capo' in the Genovese Family." Those are the indictment's charges. For detention purposes only, the court found the government had shown "by 'clear and convincing' proof" that Salerno was the head of an organization engaged in extortion, loansharking, illegal gambling, and murder.

The government's proffer included "excerpts from electronic surveillance in two locations in Manhattan from which Genovese Family business was conducted — the Palma Boys Social Club and the Social Club at 2244 First Avenue." The opinion gives no street address for the Palma Boys Social Club. It also refers to Salerno's earlier indictment in "US. v. Colombo, 85 Cr. 139, the 'Commission' case."

The court ordered both men committed to the custody of the Attorney General pending trial. The Second Circuit's 1989 opinion in the Commission case is a separate record on this site.
