# Arthur "Doc" Barker at Alcatraz: identification photograph (FBI)

Canonical: https://mobfiles.org/items/fbi-doc-barker-alcatraz-photo/

Head-and-shoulders identification photograph of Arthur "Doc" Barker holding a U.S. Penitentiary placard, published by the FBI with the caption that it shows him at Alcatraz. A copy is stored here.

The FBI's Barker/Karpis page captions this photograph "Gangster Arthur 'Doc' Barker, member of Barker-Karpis gang, at Alcatraz." The placard at the bottom of the frame begins "U.S. Penitent..."; the rest is cut off.

The FBI gives no date. His [Alcatraz notebook page](/items/nara-296721-doc-barker-alcatraz-1935/) records his receipt on October 26, 1935 and his death in the prison hospital on January 13, 1939, so a photograph taken at Alcatraz falls between those dates. The notebook page carries a different identification photograph.
