# FBI Chicago clipping compilation, October 1959 to January 1960: Accardo's European trip and a Chicago police lieutenant (Vault Accardo Part 01)

The FBI's compilation of newspaper clippings about Accardo and a Chicago police lieutenant travelling in Europe at the same time in October 1959, as the FBI's own caption lines describe them. This page rests only on those caption lines.

Pages 305 to 370 of the Accardo file (Chicago file 92-344) are the Chicago office's compilation of newspaper clippings. Each clipping is introduced by an FBI caption naming the newspaper, edition, date, page and headline. This page rests on those FBI caption lines only.

The captions cover the October 1959 disclosure that Accardo and Lt. Anthony De Grazio of the Chicago police were travelling in Europe at the same time, the lieutenant's suspension, the filing of Civil Service charges against him of associating with a known criminal, and the January 1960 commission finding that led to his dismissal. One caption (p. 308) lists the Chicago Sun-Times of October 22, 1959, page 3, headline "Police Here Query Scotland Yard If Officer Is On Tour With Accardo." Another lists the Chicago American of January 27 with the headline "Accardo Pal Pays Price of European Jaunt"; the OCR reads the year as 1950, which the October 1959 events around it show to be 1960.

The outcome stated above (suspension, charges, dismissal) follows the headlines as the FBI captioned them. The articles themselves are third-party copyrighted text; they are not summarized, quoted or stored, and the lieutenant's earlier police history reproduced in them is not recorded. This archive read the page through the Vault viewer's OCR text layer. The scans are poor; names, dates and figures can be garbled, and many names are redacted under FOIA exemptions (b6, b7C, b7D).
