# Memorandum Eddy to Evans, 12 June 1962: Frank Lee Morris, John William Anglin and Clarence Anglin, escaped federal prisoners (FBI Vault)

An FBI memorandum of 12 June 1962 recording that at 7:28 p.m. no trace of Morris and the Anglin brothers had been found at the prison, on the island, on the mainland or in the water; an addendum says the Coast Guard found a paddle in the bay.

Page 2 of the Vault file "Alcatraz Escape," Part 01 (100 pages), as the viewer numbers it. It is a memorandum from A. B. Eddy to Mr. Evans dated 6-12-62 whose subject is "FRANK LEE MORRIS - FUGITIVE; JOHN WILLIAM ANGLIN - FUGITIVE; CLARENCE ANGLIN - FUGITIVE; ESCAPED FEDERAL PRISONER." It records that at 7:28 p.m. the Special Agent in Charge, Price, called to say no information had been developed on their whereabouts: "Investigation has failed to locate subjects at the prison or on the island and no trace of them has been found on the mainland or in the water." San Francisco was continuing to question a person, whose name is redacted, who "conspired with captioned subjects and originally planned to escape with them." Assistant Director Wilkinson of the Bureau of Prisons was due in San Francisco that night to check the prison.

An addendum dated 6/13/62 (call at 7:40 a.m.) says SAC Doyle Kintz advised that the Coast Guard had found a paddle of the type used by the subjects, floating in the bay between Alcatraz and Angel Island. The file number at the right of the page is handwritten and partly obscured, so none is recorded here. The Vault's description for the whole file says the investigation lasted nearly two decades and closed in December 1979 without determining whether the three men survived. The Bureau of Prisons says they "are officially listed as missing and presumed drowned" ([BOP Alcatraz history](/items/bop-alcatraz-history/)).
