# FBI Vault file on Anthony Accardo

Canonical: https://mobfiles.org/items/fbi-vault-anthony-accardo/

The FBI Vault's release of the Bureau file on Anthony Accardo, in two parts, including a 1946 informant report, a 1959 Chicago memorandum relaying a source's account of the Chicago syndicate's hierarchy, and early-1970s teletypes on its leadership.

The Vault lists two parts: "Anthony Accardo Part 01" and "Anthony Accardo Part 02 (Final)." This archive read them through the viewer's OCR text layer. The reading tool stopped at 400 pages of Part 01, so any later pages were not read. Part 02 has 24 pages. The date range on this page covers the documents described below.

Part 02, page 2, is an extract of a 1946 report "regarding ANTHONY JOSEPH ACCARDO, alias Tony Accardo, alias Joe Batters," based on informants who watched his residence in August 1946. It names among the callers "SAM GIANCANA, with alias, 'Mooney.'"

Part 02, page 5, is a Chicago office memorandum dictated July 22, 1959. A Chicago Tribune reporter told an agent what a reporter friend had been told by an unnamed person, so the account is at best third-hand. It says "the man" and "the boss" are the two top positions in the "Chicago syndicate hierarchy." It says that before 1955 "the man" was Louis Campagna (the OCR reads "CAERPAGHA"), that "Upon his death ... PAUL RICCA assumed this position," that "After RICCA went to prison, SAM GIANCANA moved in and took over both positions," and that "GIANCANA in 1957 forced ACCARDO into semi-retirement and assumed the reins of the Syndicate," leaving Accardo available "as more or less an elder statesman." Page 6 relays an attorney's remark that the "young turks" were taking over the Chicago syndicate, and names among them "PHIL ALBERISIO [OCR]," "JACK CERONE," and "SAM BATTAGLIA." These are a source's statements recorded by an agent, not Bureau findings.

Part 01, pages 154, 157, and 249, are Chicago teletypes of the early 1970s; page 157 refers back to a teletype of January 15, 1972. They describe Accardo as "ONE OF TOP LEADERSHIP TEAM DIRECTING ORGANIZED CRIME IN CHICAGO" and say that Gus Alex and Accardo "ARE TWO MEMBERS OF THREE MAN LEADERSHIP TEAM CURRENTLY DIRECTING AFFAIRS ORGANIZED CRIME CHICAGO." These are the Chicago office's own assessments.

The National Archives' Alcatraz record for register number 1498 is for Anthony Michael Accardo, born 1923, held on a District of Columbia charge. He is not the subject of this file.
