# Press clippings on the August 1934 transfer from Atlanta to Alcatraz, filed in the FBI Capone file

Part 06 of the Vault file is a run of wire-service and newspaper clippings, mostly of 20–24 August 1934, on the guarded rail transfer of Capone and other Atlanta prisoners to Alcatraz. They are listed here as a pointer and are not reproduced.

Part 06 of the FBI Vault's Capone file is almost entirely newspaper and wire-service clippings that the Bureau collected and routed, many with routing stamps naming Bureau officials. No Bufile number is legible in its OCR. Scans 16 to 62 concern the transfer of Capone and other inmates from the U.S. Penitentiary at Atlanta to Alcatraz Island in August 1934. The research index identifies Associated Press, United Press and International News Service copy, and page headers of the Kansas City Times of Thursday 23 and Friday 24 August 1934.

As the research index summarizes them, the clippings report that Capone and fifty-two other prisoners (the count is from scan 17) reached Alcatraz after a guarded rail journey from Atlanta, with a stop at New Orleans and passage through Houston. A dispatch datelined "San Francisco, Aug. 22" (scan 41) describes the arrival. Warden James Johnston is reported as saying contact with the outside would be cut off, and Attorney General Cummings and Bureau of Prisons Director Sanford Bates are quoted on the move. Other clippings describe the island prison, "The Rock", and Capone's reported reaction.

The articles are 1934 publications of private newspapers and wire services, and their copyright status has not been checked.
