# FBI Vault: Jimmy Hoffa, Part 01

Canonical: https://mobfiles.org/items/fbi-vault-hoffa-part-01/

The first of the FBI Vault parts on the Hoffa disappearance: 168 pages, largely newspaper clippings gathered after 30 July 1975, with the FBI's press release of 3 August 1975 announcing that it was taking jurisdiction under the federal extortion statutes.

The FBI publishes its file on the Hoffa disappearance in the Vault in nineteen parts. Part 01 has 168 pages. Much of it is newspaper clippings collected at FBI headquarters in the days after 30 July 1975. It also holds teletypes from the Detroit office captioned HOFFEX.

The page shown here is an FBI release headed "For immediate release August 3, 1975." It reads: "FBI Director Clarence M. Kelley has just announced that the FBI has actively entered into the investigation of the disappearance of former Teamsters Union President James R. Hoffa." It says the FBI had followed the matter "since Hoffa's disappearance on Wednesday, July 30, 1975," and that "During the past 24 hours, extortionate communications have been received in connection with the disappearance of Hoffa and, accordingly, the FBI is assuming investigative jurisdiction under the Federal Extortion Statutes."

The clippings in the part name people as possible suspects. Those are the newspapers' reports, and this page does not repeat them. The Detroit file number on the teletypes reads differently on different pages of the viewer's text, so it is not given here. Parts 03 to 19 have not been read for this archive.
