The FBI's September 1947 personal-history memorandum on Charles Gioe. It says he "was found guilty on jury trial for violation of the anti-racketeering statute" in New York "on December 23, 1943," a day later than the date in the companion memoranda, and was sentenced on 31 December 1943.

Scan 9 of Part 01 of the FBI Vault's John Roselli file, the first page of a memorandum dated September 16, 1947. The research for this archive read pages 9 and 10 through the viewer's OCR; the page image stored here was read directly. The file number written at the foot is 58-2000.

The heading reads: "CHARLES GIOE, was., Charles James Joye, Charlie Joy, Charles Veltre, 'Cherry Nose'." The personal history gives his birth as February 6, 1904 at Chicago. (The research record, working from the OCR, read the year as 1901; on the page image the year is 1904.) It says that under the Selective Service and Training Act he registered "in the name of Charles James Joye." Names of family members on the page are those of private persons and are not repeated here.

Under "Anti-Racketeering Violation": "Charles Gioe was found guilty on jury trial for violation of the anti-racketeering statute in the U. S. District Court at New York City on December 23, 1943. Investigation in this case reflected that Gioe and other defendants, together with William Bioff and George E. Browne, conspired to extort large sums of money from motion picture producers. On December 31, 1943, Gioe was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment and fined $10,000." It cites "Recent newspaper accounts" for his parole on August 13, 1947.

The verdict date conflicts with the companion memoranda in the same file, which give December 22, 1943 for Campagna and for De Lucia. No court record of the verdict was opened. The page also relays "information circulated in underworld circles" that after Capone's imprisonment Gioe "was regarded as one of the members of a group which carried on Capone's illegal activities," and "unconfirmed rumors" about a gambling club. These are rumors as the Bureau recorded them, not findings.
