The FBI summarizes its interview of Eugene Bernstein, tax attorney for Paul DeLucia and Louis Campagna, who said that Anthony Accardo, 'alias Joe Batters', went with him on most of his visits to DeLucia at Leavenworth.

Part of the Chicago office's 1947 parole investigation (file 58-194). The report summarizes an interview on September 29, 1947 of Eugene Bernstein, tax attorney for Paul DeLucia and Louis Campagna.

Bernstein said he visited DeLucia two or three times at the Atlanta penitentiary and six to eight times at Leavenworth, and that on most visits he was accompanied by "Anthony Accardo, alias Joe Batters." He said he never took anyone else and did not know what name Accardo used on the prison register. The OCR adds a phrase about Accardo's reputed position that is too garbled to quote, so it is not used. The page shown is from the same report's interview of Philip D'Andrea, who said that apart from a $7,000 attorney fee no money was paid in connection with his parole, and who called the testimony of Bernstein and Campagna about some eighty or ninety thousand dollars delivered to Bernstein to settle Campagna's income-tax suit "fantastic." Those are D'Andrea's words as the agent recorded them.

This is the FBI's summary of what Bernstein said. His sworn account to the Kefauver Committee three years later is filed as [Kefauver Part 5: Bernstein](/items/kefauver-p5-bernstein-testimony-1950-10-17/). This archive read the page through the Vault viewer's OCR text layer. The scans are poor; names, dates and figures can be garbled, and many names are redacted under FOIA exemptions (b6, b7C, b7D).
