# Kefauver Part 5, Exhibit 43: chronology of the wire service, July 1945 to January 1946

Canonical: https://mobfiles.org/items/kefauver-p5-exhibit-43-wire-service-chronology/

A committee chronology in four columns, wire service, date, important events and scratch sheets, tracing the contest between Continental and a "Mob" wire from July 1945 to January 1946, offered on December 18, 1950.

Exhibit No. 43 is printed at page 1391 of Part 5. On December 18, 1950, chief counsel Rudolph Halley offered four charts on the racing wire service; the first, a map of Continental Press telegraph lines, was received as Exhibit 41 and is on file with the committee, not printed (printed page 854). Halley offered as the fourth "a chronology showing certain major events in the history of the wire service since 1945," and added that it "has been mimeographed and distributed to those who are interested."

The chronology has four columns headed "Wire Service," "Date," "Important Events" and "Scratch Sheets," with small boxes for Continental, Midwest and a wire labelled "Mob" Wire (R & H). Its entries run from July 1945 to January 1946. They describe a 1945 proposition to James Ragen by Humphreys and Guzik "for interest in business," a "competing wire" started in October or November 1945, and Midwest cutting off R & H about December 1945 or January 1946. The entries are the staff's summary of testimony, partly what Ragen said, not findings.

This is a hearing exhibit. The names, ranks and relationships printed on it are the labels of a committee staff chronology. They are not findings of the committee or of a court, and this archive does not copy any of them onto a family page or a person page.
