Library of Congress Harris & Ewing photograph, captioned "Stop when you see this sign", of the insignia plate the Bureau of Prohibition adopted for agents stopping suspected automobiles.

The Library of Congress caption reads "Stop when you see this sign. This is the new insignia plate the Bureau of Prohibition has adopted for use by prohibition agents in stopping suspected automobiles." It names, left to right, Prohibition Administrator Ames Woodcock, H.M. Lucious, secretary of the Automobile Club of Maryland, and Ernest M. Smith, vice-president of the A.A.A. The negative is dated 25 August 1930.

The caption data is unverified, per the Library. The photograph shows the plate, not a stop or a search. The Supreme Court's 1925 opinion in Carroll v. United States, filed here, addressed when agents could stop and search an automobile; this page does not connect the two. The copy stored here is the Library of Congress service JPEG.
