Canonical: https://mobfiles.org/items/nara-236734838-frankie-carbo-alcatraz-1962/

Bureau of Prisons notebook page with the identification photograph of Paul John Carbo, No. 1568-AZ, received at Alcatraz from the Southern District of California on 24 May 1962 under a 25-year sentence for obstructing interstate commerce by extortion; a red header gives a transfer on 2-6-63. A copy is stored here.

The National Archives catalog titles this page "CARBO, PAUL JOHN "FRANKIE" - Alcatraz Number 1568 - Warden's Notebook." It is a Bureau of Prisons notebook form with an identification photograph at the upper right; the placard in the photograph reads "1568, 5 24 62". It belongs to the series Warden's Notebook Pages (NAID 296686).

The typed entries, as printed: name "CARBO, Paul John," No. "1568-AZ," received 5-24-62 from "S. Calif," age 57, date of birth 8-10-04. Offense "Willfully Obstructing, Delaying & Affecting I/S Commerce By Extortion"; date of sentence 12-2-61; sentence "25 Years"; sentence began 5-16-62; district sentenced "S. Calif. Los Angeles"; detainers "None"; escape record "None noted." A handwritten red header reads, as read from the scan, "Transferred to McNeal 2-6-63." The "Reason for Transfer" box and the criminal-history box are staff text: the first says he was received direct from court and designated for Alcatraz by the Bureau, and the second is a staff summary of his record and of the evidence at trial. They are not repeated here as fact.

Catalog data, labelled as such: offense as above; received at Alcatraz 05/24/1962 from direct commitment; transferred 02/06/1963 to US Penitentiary, Marion; the remark reads "TN: CARBO, PAUL GIANFRANCO; FL DEATH INDEX," and the birth date is flagged "(?)"; death date 11/09/1976 at Miami Beach, Florida. The destination differs between the two: the page's handwritten header, as read here, names McNeal (presumably McNeil Island), while the catalog description of this item and of the case file prints Marion on the same date. This archive records both and does not choose. The case file (about 1,000 pages, not digitized) is described in [a separate entry](/items/nara-117695843-carbo-alcatraz-case-file/).
