Bureau of Prisons notebook page with the identification photograph of Sam Fleisher, No. 327, received at Alcatraz on 6 August 1936 on the same Detroit internal revenue conspiracy case as his brother Harry; transferred to Leavenworth 18 March 1937. A copy is stored here.

The National Archives catalog titles this page "SAM FLEISHER - Alcatraz Number 327 - Warden's Notebook." The placard in the identification photograph reads "U. S. Penitentiary Alcatraz 327."

As typed: name Sam Fleisher, No. 327, received Aug. 6, 1936 from Leavenworth, age 28, date of birth 4/28/08. Offense "Int. Rev.-Consp.," dated April 15, 1936; sentence "8 years & $20,000 fine"; district sentenced "E/Michigan - Detroit." The co-defendants are "Harry Fleisher (Subjects brother) Jack Selbin and Joe Stein, All at Alcatraz. John J. Gettleson now serving a 2 years term." A red line reads "United States Attorney recommends parole when eligible." The criminal history column records only an arrest at Jackson, Michigan on 6-11-35 as a fugitive from justice, "released to Federal Authorities on present offense." A stamp at the top reads "Transferred to USP Leavenworth, March 18, 1937."

The "Reason for Transfer" box, the classification committee's opinion, reads: "Subject is allegedly one of the 'Purple Gang' The operation of this gang was widely publicized and the gang was apparently one of the worst. Subject himself is not a leader but is a typical young hoodlum who would willingly join in any agitation." The catalog description gives Detroit as his birthplace and a death in Miami on 18 January 1960; those are catalog data, not entries on the page.
