Canonical: https://mobfiles.org/items/nara-24520406-capone-mug-shot/

Police photograph of Capone in a light fedora and striped tie, with a placard numbered 90725 and dated in May '29, from the New York Times Paris Bureau photo file at the National Archives. A copy is stored here.

The National Archives catalog titles this photographic print "Mug Shot of Al Capone." It is in the U.S. Information Agency's Photographic File of the Paris Bureau of the New York Times (Record Group 306), Local ID 306-NT-163820c, held by Still Pictures at College Park. The catalog gives no date. The copy stored here is a 900-pixel downsample of the catalog's digital object.

The print is a head-and-shoulders police photograph: Capone in a light fedora and a striped tie, with a placard reading 90725 and a date. The day on the placard can be read as 16 or 18; a National Archives volunteer transcription reads it "5 18 1929". The FBI publishes the same photograph captioned "Mug shot of Al Capone on May 16, 1929" ([FBI image](/items/fbi-capone-mugshot-1929/)). The National Archives' 1997 American Originals exhibit captions this print "Al Capone, 1930 (National Archives, Still Picture Branch, 306-NT-163.820C)". The date field on this page is the span of those statements; this archive does not choose among them.

The catalog does not name the police department that took the photograph, and nothing on this page treats it as a federal work. The rights note above records why the image is used: the item-level "Use: Unrestricted" mark, read against the series caution.
