The series description gives 26,283 file units dated from 3 July 1895 to 5 November 1957, as the catalog states. Nearly every file has a record sheet with name, registration number, alias, crime, sentence and dates; most have a front-and-profile identification photograph; many carry rap sheets, commitment orders, fingerprints, Bertillon measurements and correspondence logs. The records are held by the National Archives at Kansas City.

Only a sampled subset is digitized. Searches of this series for several other names from the organized-crime record returned no file. An item in the series photographed under the name Frank Costello was not identified with the New York figure of that name and is not filed.
