Part 1 of the 1983 Senate Judiciary Committee hearings, opening with the Attorney General and FBI Director William H. Webster. Webster called Jimmy Fratianno "an LCN member" and a government witness in the witness protection program; a note for the record reports Angelo A. Lonardo's 1983 conviction.

Part 1 of the Judiciary Committee's 1983 hearings opened on January 27, 1983 with Attorney General William French Smith and FBI Director William H. Webster. The scan prints two pages to a sheet.

Answering a question about outlaw motorcycle gangs (printed pages 72 and 73), Webster said: "Jimmy Fratianno who is an LCN member and has been a Government witness who is under our witness protection program, has indicated that the LCN has utilized outlaw motorcycle gangs as enforcers." In the same answer he listed recent convictions, including "the Brooklier organization in Los Angeles" and the Frank Tieri conviction in New York, and said "The entire Cleveland hierarchy has been taken out."

A note "subsequently supplied for the record" on the same page reports that a jury in the Northern District of Ohio "returned guilty verdicts against all defendants in a major narcotics investigation wherein Angelo A. Lonardo, the underboss of the Cleveland LCN family was sentenced to life imprisonment plus 103 years." The OCR dates the verdicts April 8, 1983; Senator Nunn's 1988 introduction gives April 7, 1983 as the date of conviction. Fratianno did not testify in this part. Webster's description of him is the FBI Director's testimony, not a court finding.
