Canonical: https://mobfiles.org/items/valachi-chart-a-genovese/

New York police fold-out chart presented on October 8, 1963, with photographs, FBI or police numbers and an activity code. A star marks names "identified by Joseph Valachi."

Chart A is the first of the five New York family charts that Deputy Chief Inspector John J. Shanley presented on October 8, 1963. It is printed after page 248 of Part 1. It was scanned in six segments, at NCJRS PDF pages 262 to 267. The image stored here is the second segment, PDF page 263, which carries the chart's heading and top boxes.

The chart is headed "The Vito Genovese Family." Its top boxes label Vito Genovese, alias "Don Vitone," as "Boss," with a "Messenger" box beneath him. A box labelled "Acting Boss" holds Thomas Eboli, alias "Tommy Ryan," named as "Successor to" Anthony Strollo, alias "Tony Bender," whom the chart labels "missing and presumed murdered." Gerardo Catena is labelled "Underboss," and Michele Miranda "Consigliere." Below them run the caporegime, present and former, and their "regimes" of "Soldiers—Buttons." Each man has a photograph, an FBI or New York police number, and codes from the chart's "Key to Activity Code." A star marks the names "Identified by Joseph Valachi."

In testimony Shanley gave 1,064 arrests among the men on this chart, and Senator Mundt counted 142 people on it (printed page 248). Segments at PDF pages 265 to 267, which hold most of the soldiers, have been checked only through the text layer. Some caporegime are printed beside "Successor to" boxes whose order is not clear.

This is a subcommittee exhibit. The names, ranks and relationships printed on it are the labels of a 1963 police or staff chart. They are not findings of the subcommittee or of a court, and this archive does not copy any of them onto a family page or a person page. The scan is the Bureau of Narcotics library copy of the printed hearings. The fold-out was photographed in overlapping segments, so a name at the edge of one segment may be cut off and repeated on the next.
