# Exhibit No. 40: "Non-Member Associates" of the Chicago-Italian organization

Canonical: https://mobfiles.org/items/valachi-exhibit-40-chicago-associates/

A Chicago police fold-out chart of associates whom it labels non-members, entered after Exhibit 39 on October 11, 1963.

Exhibit No. 40 faces printed page 509 of Part 2. It was scanned in two segments, at NCJRS PDF pages 566 and 567. The image stored here is the first segment, PDF page 566.

The heading reads "Non-Member Associ[ates] ... Chicago-Italian Org." over a band labelled "Overall Chicago." That band prints Murray "The Camel" Humphreys, alias "John Humphrey"; Gus Alex; Fred Thomas Smith; Ralph Pierce; and Lester Kruse. A "West Side" group follows. Each man has a photograph, an FBI or Chicago police number, and activity codes. The segment reprints the "Key to Activity Code," ending with a star for "Identified by Joseph Valachi." The second segment, PDF page 567, has been checked only through the text layer.

The chart's own label calls these men non-members. Like the rest of the chart, that label is the police department's.

This is a subcommittee exhibit. The names, ranks and relationships printed on it are the labels of a 1963 police or staff chart. They are not findings of the subcommittee or of a court, and this archive does not copy any of them onto a family page or a person page. The scan is the Bureau of Narcotics library copy of the printed hearings. The fold-out was photographed in overlapping segments, so a name at the edge of one segment may be cut off and repeated on the next.
