# Exhibit No. 8: "Masseria-Maranzano War and Evolution of Gang Control—1930 to Present"

Canonical: https://mobfiles.org/items/valachi-exhibit-8-masseria-maranzano-chart/

Staff fold-out chart presented on October 1, 1963: the 1930 to 1931 war in three key-coded groups and the lines of succession drawn from it to five 1963 bosses. Several name boxes are illegible in the scan.

Exhibit No. 8 is a fold-out chart in Part 1, facing printed page 162. It was scanned in six segments, at NCJRS PDF pages 172 to 177. The image stored here is the first segment, PDF page 172. Staff member La Vern J. Duffy presented it on October 1, 1963. Chairman McClellan introduced it as one of the "charts that have been prepared by the staff after consulting with some witnesses, including the witness who is now testifying" (printed page 161).

The chart is headed "Masseria-Maranzano War and Evolution of Gang Control—1930 to Present." It sets out three key-coded groups: Luciano-Genovese, Masseria and Maranzano. The Masseria group has boxes labelled "Boss" and "Bosses." Two boxes labelled "Boss of Bosses" run down the next segment, and the Maranzano group's "Boss" box reads "Salvatore Maranzano." The chart runs from Salvatore Maranzano and Gaetano Reina down to five men it labels as the 1963 bosses: Vito Genovese, Carlo Gambino, Giuseppe Magliocco, Joseph Bonanno and Gaetano Lucchese, with their underbosses. A box on the first segment labels James Catania, alias "Joe Baker," a soldier "Murdered Feb 3, 1931."

Several of the white-on-black name boxes did not survive the scan. The "Boss" and "Bosses" boxes of the Masseria group (PDF page 172), the two "Boss of Bosses" boxes and the Maranzano group's underboss box (PDF page 173), and the Maranzano boss box on PDF page 174 are illegible. This archive does not supply names for them.

This is a subcommittee exhibit. The names, ranks and relationships printed on it are the labels of a 1963 police or staff chart. They are not findings of the subcommittee or of a court, and this archive does not copy any of them onto a family page or a person page. The scan is the Bureau of Narcotics library copy of the printed hearings. The fold-out was photographed in overlapping segments, so a name at the edge of one segment may be cut off and repeated on the next. A Library of Congress photograph of October 1, 1963 shows a man pointing to this chart while Valachi sits at the witness table.
