The front page of the Arizona Republican, Phenix (as the masthead spells it), Friday morning, 17 October 1890, carries a one-paragraph telegraphic item headed “Policeman Killed.” The masthead says the paper publishes “the Full Dispatches of the Associated Press.” The item is datelined “New Orleans, October 16.”

It reads, as checked against the page image: “David C. Hennessy, Chief of Police, was fatally shot at midnight by three men near the corner of Basin and Girod Streets. Four shots entered his body. Assailants so far unknown.” The Library of Congress OCR garbles “the corner” as “tlie comer.”

The deck, “Shot By Italians Whose Vendettas He Tried to Suppress,” goes further than the item itself. The item says only that “It is supposed” to be the work of Italians and that “Several arrests have been made.” This archive cites the page for the time and street corner as first reported. It does not adopt the paper’s supposition about who fired, and the item does not state the calendar date of the shooting beyond the dateline.
