The Beatrice Daily Express of 17 October 1890 prints a wire report dated New Orleans, 17 October, under the headline “Chief of Police Hennessy of New Orleans Assassinated” (the paper spells the name Hennessey). It prints a statement attributed to Capt. William J. O’Connor of the Boylan Protective police: after parting from the chief at Girard Street, he heard shotgun reports and saw flashes from a two-story frame house at the uptown river corner of Girard and Basin streets, found the chief sitting on a doorstep on Basin Street, and heard him say “Dagoes.”
The paper’s “Girard” is the street usually spelled Girod. The page names Girard, Basin, Rampart and Dryades streets in the text. The statement is a reported account of what an officer said, and the word attributed to the chief is quoted as printed.
