Page 2 of the Bismarck Tribune for Thursday, 13 September 1928. The column “Kidnapings and Hijacking Laid to Racketeers,” with the decks “Zest and Variety Added by Entry of Gangsters to Detroit” and “Murders Are Also Attributed to ‘Purple Gangs’ in Auto City,” is introduced as the seventh article in a series on racketeering by James P. Kirby, written for the Tribune and NEA Service, and carries a Detroit dateline.
The article says that one hundred bombings marked the entry of the Chicago racketeer into Detroit, that Chicago men affiliated with local talent, “notably the ‘Purple Gang’,” that nine people identified with the dry-cleaning racket were on trial for conspiracy and extortion, and that police attributed three murders to the gang.
This is a syndicated feature writer’s account, not a record of any proceeding. The same NEA article ran in the Washington Daily News and the Indianapolis Times that month; those pages were read but are not filed separately. The next day’s installment, on Cleveland, is filed as the Bismarck Tribune of 14 September 1928.
