Page 5 of the Bismarck Tribune for Saturday, 27 July 1929. The short item “Purple-Gang Member Found Shot to Death,” credited to the Associated Press and datelined Detroit, July 27, reports that Irving Shapiro, 25, known as a member of the purple gang, was found shot to death in the street that morning.

It says he had been shot four times, that all marks of identification had been stripped from his clothing, and that he was identified by his fingerprints. The item names no suspect.

The description of Shapiro is the wire service’s. The OCR text is noisy; the headline was read from the scan.
